The Institute
R. Sean Randolph The Bay Area Council Economic Institute is a public-private partnership of business, labor, government and higher education, that works to support the economic vitality and competitiveness of California and the Bay Area. Its work builds on the twenty-year record of fact-based economic analysis and policy leadership of the Bay Area Ecoonomic Forum, which merged with the Bay Area Council in January 2008. The Bay Area Council and the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) are the Institute’s leading institutional partners. The Economic Institute also supports and manages the Bay Area Science and Innovation Consortium (BASIC), a partnership of Northern California’s leading scientific research institutions and laboratories. Through its economic and policy research and partnerships, the Economic Institute addresses major issues impacting the competitiveness, economic development and quality of life of the region and the state, including infrastructure, globalization, science and technology, and governance. Its Board of Trustees, which oversees the development of its products and initiatives, is composed of leaders representing business, labor, government, higher education, science and technology, philanthropy and the community. A Message from Chairman Lenny Mendonca
Lenny Mendonca The Bay Area is one of the world’s greatest regional economies. It benefits from pre-eminent knowledge-based industries, with competitive strength flowing from an unmatched culture of entrepreneurship, world-leading research institutions, and the nation's best educated and most highly skilled workforce. With these remarkable advantages, it has led through innovation in a wide range of research and industrial fields. The Bay Area economy also benefits from an outstanding quality of life and a diversity of cultures, which heighten its role as a global intellectual and commercial center. The keys to meeting our challenges and achieving even greater success lie in our hands. By working together, the Bay Area can assure its economic leadership into the 21st century.
Bay Area Council Economic Institute Leadership The Bay Area Council Economic Institute provides a shared platform for leaders to act on key issues affecting the regional economy. It accomplishes this by producing focused analyses on key issues affecting the Bay Area and its future, and by mobilizing regional and state leaders to address those issues, based on working partnerships and a strong foundation of economic and policy analysis. The strength of the Economic Institute lies in its Board of Trustees and the relationships and assistance provided by its sponsors and partner organizations throughout the region and the state.
