Evolving Models for Sustainable Urban Growth
International Symposium

San Francisco, California
February 23–25, 2011

About the Symposium

Cities are at the epicenter of a global shift of population from rural to urban settings. They are the powerhouses of the global economy and contribute centrally to knowledge production and innovation. The future of cities will therefore be a defining element of the global future. Its economy will be one that maximizes efficiency in the use of land, water and energy, thereby conserving resources, reducing impact on the environment, and enhancing livability. Understanding the relationship between cities and this emerging green economy is critical.

This international symposium is a high-level exchange among world-leading elected officials, planners, researchers, technologists and business leaders on the theme of sustainable urban development and the evolution of green cities. Its objective is to advance the state of the art in green urban design, based on the vision and shared experience of a selection of the world’s most innovative cities. Focal points will include urban design, the applications of technology, and behavior. Its location in San Francisco will highlight technology and policy advances coming from California.

The event will span three days, beginning with a welcome dinner, followed by a full day plenary session and concluding with a final day of optional off-site meetings and visits. Global collaboration will be achieved through both on-site participation and the use of Cisco TelePresence, a high-definition and highly advanced visual, audio and collaborative technology enabling virtual presence worldwide.

The symposium will directly link discussions of green cities with the green economy. In contrast with conferences where experts make presentations to a general audience, it is designed to directly engage all participants, delivering value for experts and practitioners. Its focus on the themes of design, technology and behavior is designed to facilitate the cross-fertilization of ideas and perspectives. To ensure quality interaction, attendance is limited to 150 invited participants. Invitations are being extended based on the recipients’ accomplishments and reputation for innovative leadership in their respective fields, and their ability to contribute at a high level to current and future dialogues. Outcomes will include: enhanced understanding of how cities can act as laboratories for new policies, programs and technologies to advance a green economy; practical information regarding the most successful green city practices; and an enriched perspective on innovative technologies for sustainable urban development and planning.
