Science Education
A critical
element in sustaining the leadership of the Bay Area in science and
technology is a continuing flow of young people enthusiastically selecting
science and math as their fields of interest and their ultimate future
careers.
BASIC Support and Promotion of
Ongoing K–12 Programs
BASIC works to utilize its
unique strength and network to help bridge the gap between young people who
could become interested in science and the region’s R&D community.
To implement this objective, BASIC:
- Provides continuing financial and promotional support to
an ongoing science education Program.
Wonderfest—an annual,
high-quality community science education event and science high school
competition, sponsored by UC Berkeley and Stanford University, has been
selected for focused support by BASIC. The Wonderfest High school science
competition is branded as the BASIC WonderCup Challenge.
A Klein bottle trophy (pictured at right), the WonderCup,
goes to the Bay Area’s best science challenge team. It’s a closed
2-dimensional surface with no inside or outside!
Visit the Wonderfest website for more information: www.wonderfest.org
- Has developed a directory of ongoing K–12 science and
math programs by member organizations, tech museums and other recognized
entities in the region.
- Works to highlight science
“stars”—recognizing outstanding efforts by adults in K–12 science outreach and
by K–12 youth in scientific/engineering achievements.
Science & Technology K–12
Program Directory
BASIC presents below an overview of
ongoing science-related programs focused on K–12, in order to assist the
regional community in becoming aware and taking advantage of programs designed
by distinguished public and private sector organizations to encourage young
people to experience the excitement and opportunities of careers in scientific
fields.*
